A screen, not a window
It starts 0.8 m in front of you at standing height. Move your head and it does not move. Its aspect follows the clip, so a portrait video becomes a portrait screen — it is never stretched to fit.
Meta Quest 3 / 3Sv1.0.0
Aera puts a real screen into your space and plays video on it. You grab it, move it, size it and turn it with the controllers — and it stays put when you walk away.
Submitted 22 September 2026 and awaiting review — it takes a day or two to appear in the store.
Every other VR player gives you a picture. Aera gives you a screen — with position, size and orientation of its own, living in the room you are standing in.

Point it at a server on your own LAN over plain HTTP, or browse your own storage. You can also “Open with” a video from Gallery or Files and land straight in VR. There is no account and no signup.
Equirectangular and half-dome panoramas, Oculus stereo fisheye, side-by-side, over-under and half-resolution side-by-side. It reads the container and the filename and picks the right projection itself.
Every mode is one tap in the spatial panel. Defaults live in Settings, and the play bar is a per-clip override.
The default. Any ordinary video on a screen you can grab and move.
Panoramas wrap around you. Look wherever you like, and turn with the thumbstick.
Two-lens VR clips, as a surround view. The viewing angle is adjustable, 180° to 220°.
Side by side, top and bottom, and half-width side by side — with the right image in each eye.
A two-lens rig has nothing behind your head, so the back of the dome is empty rather than stretched — and from this version it is transparent, so you see your real room. A true 360° clip covers everything and stays solid on purpose.
Turn the background off and the picture becomes part of the space around you — it stays where you left it when you step aside.
Clips shot in front of a flat-coloured background have that background removed for you, with dials for how far to remove it and how soft to make the edge.
Sources that already carry their transparency are used as they come — nothing to configure, and they combine with any of the options above.
Wherever the picture is transparent, your real room shows through, so a clip can sit against your wall and stay there while you walk past.
Right controller unless you say otherwise. The screen never follows your head.
Play / pause. In an image gallery, the previous image. B is the next one.
Drag the screen — it follows your hand while held. Pressed on empty space it plays or pauses.
Double-click on empty space to switch the panel on and off, so it is out of the way while you watch.
Scale the screen, from 0.1× to 8×.
In panorama modes, rotate the view around the world.
Rotate the screen 90° clockwise.
Play/pause is on A, not the trigger. The trigger is kept for dragging, because on Quest it loses contact too easily to trust as a click.

Not planned: spatial audio, HDR, subtitles, several screens at once, a media library, accounts, cloud sync and recommendations.
Always yours: your video never leaves your device, and the app asks for nothing it cannot work without.
